I threw my will out, clawing, scratching, gouging, fighting to rein in my Gift. This was too much, my master’s Gift, his memories flowing into me. It shredded my soul to know that this … this abomination … was my Gift. With a scream I opened my hands. My joints creaked and popped, my fingers still hooked into claws. Bloody crescents lined the inside of Ogata-sensei’s arms. As I broke contact, my Gift fought back, it wanted more, more power, more memories. I wielded my qì like a club and I beat it senseless. A cool balm swept across me, radiating from my chest. Tears streamed down my face as I raged against my Gift and the scent of ocean washed over me. Power from my Pearl bathed me in the sensations of sky and sand, calming the inferno with me. When it quieted, I strapped the hunger down under layers of my will, locking it deep inside me.

Ogata-sensei fell first, his eyes rolled up into the back of his head, collapsing onto me and taking us both to the soft, sweet grass. A sheen of sweat covered both of us. I lifted my sensei’s dead weight off my chest and gasped for air. My arms slowly faded back to normal as the foreign qì dissipated from my system. But the memories remained and tore at my soul like rending teeth. The vision of my mother through my teacher’s eyes, and the day Kaida paid the price for my weakness.
